Who is Rosalind Koons?
Rosalind is an artist located in Richmond, Virginia where she has done many local exhibits. She is a VCU alumni who graduated in sculpture, extended media, and art history. Additionally, she was a professional VMFA fellow through 2024-2025. Currently, she works at The Cultural Art Center in Glen Allen, Virginia where she teaches classes. She notes that The Cultural Art Center has been volunteer and internship opportunities.
What are some elements that inspire Rosalind's work?
A big part of her work is inspired by an autoimmune disorder she has dealt with since she was nine years old. She combines artistic elements with elements that grapple her experience as a patient within her work. Some experiences that are reflected within her artwork include spending time alone, being bed bound, and hospitals. One example of a specific art piece with medical elements would be Sustenance, which she made in 2022.

Rosalind specifically notes that the tubing throughout the piece represents aspects of the medical environment, such as Ivs, and making these aspects beautiful. The tubing has pearls within it, which shows how Rosalind takes an "ugly" material and makes it beautiful as well as making it become a part of this alien sculpture.
What does Rosalind consider to be important when creating art?
-> Fine are does not have to be fine material. Rosalind states that she often uses cheap material she fins in estate sales, thrifts stores, or in Lowes.
-> Experimentation is key, not only though the use of materials, but through ideas.
-> Lastly, art is fun.
