William Kentridge is a multimedia artist whose works profoundly engages with strong political and social themes. His media vastly ranges from drawing, to sculpture, to performances, and even operas. He was born April 28th, 1955 in Johannesburg, South Africa. His parents were both lawyers that fought for the oppressed Black population during apartheid. In 1974, he begins studying political science and African studies after briefly studying fine arts at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits). During 1976-1978, he studies art again, but at the Johannesburg Art Foundation, while continuing his studies at Wits.

Some of His Expeditions:

1998: São Paulo Biennial

1996, 2008: Sydney Biennale

2012: William Kentridge: Plot for A Model Opera

2016: Triumphs and Laments

2022: Weigh All Tears

2024: Taipei Fine Arts Museum Survey

2025: "Listen to the Echo"

2026: "William Kentridge: Resistance"

His work vs my reactions:

My latest piece included a portrait on top of layered paper, similar to this one, however my edges were even. In Kentridge's piece, he shows the layering more clearly through allowing some of the pieces of paper to reach further than others along edge. I really like the effect of the uneven, yet natural borders. Overall, I really like this piece, specifically because of Kentridge's charcoal details and because of the layered paper effect.
