Vik Muniz is a contemporary artist who makes visual art. He was born December 12th, 1961 in São Paulo, Brazil. Through borrowing books during high school, Muniz discovered his interest for art. He moved to New York, where he officially began his artist career. Muniz is now known for his vast use of materials in his work, including chocolate, jelly, sugar, toys, magazine shreds, and trash. His work vs my reactions

Recently, in my own work, I have been exploring the idea of the hidden identity found in peoples garbage, which led me to make a portrait of myself with my own trash. Although Muniz makes his pieces out of trash to raise awareness of urban poverty, which is different from my theme, and his pieces are photographs while mine are on canvas, I can still learn a lot from him. For example, I like how he uses trash that consists of many colors, which is something I would like to do since my last trash piece was in grayscale. Overall, his piece is beautiful, I love it.

Within my work in general, I often am reluctant to make a background. This is because I often feel short on time, so I put all my effort into only the subject instead. I do want to continue making more trash pieces, but this time, with a background. I like the way Muniz made this background, specifically, I like his choice of color. By choosing a color not included in the subject itself, the viewer can effectively differentiate the subject from the background. Additionally, the choice to make the background a light color allows the background to not draw too much attention, which keeps the subject as the main focus. Overall, I think this piece is really pretty and well-made.
